Gold: separate the dollar, real yields and demand before choosing a story

Gold can attract several explanations at once. Start with three separate questions.

What changed in the discount-rate environment?
Gold does not pay a coupon. Changes in the attractiveness of interest-bearing alternatives can matter, but nominal yields and inflation-adjusted yields are different quantities. A nominal-rate move alone does not settle the interpretation.

What changed in the currency used to quote it?
A dollar gold quote and a local-currency gold quote can move differently. Record the quote currency before comparing two charts.

What changed in demand or market structure?
Investment flows, official-sector demand, physical demand and short-term positioning are distinct channels. Avoid assigning every intraday move to a slow-moving story.

A better discussion prompt
Which of those channels has fresh evidence, and which are you inferring? Match the evidence horizon to the chart horizon. A long-run demand observation cannot, by itself, explain a five-minute candle.
