A capitalization-weighted index can rise even when many constituents are weak. The index is answering a weighted-price question; breadth measures ask how widely participation is distributed. Neither automatically invalidates the other.
Compare compatible universes
Make sure the breadth series covers the same constituents, date and trading session as the index being discussed. An equal-weight comparison changes the weighting method, which is useful but also changes the exposure.
Look beneath one number
Sector contributions, advancing and declining shares, new highs and lows, and the distribution of returns can highlight concentration. Each measure has limitations and should be defined in the post rather than treated as a universal signal.
A helpful thread asks: “Is the move broadening, narrowing or simply rotating?” Then it identifies the observation that supports the answer. Do not equate narrow leadership with an inevitable reversal; timing and catalysts still require evidence.
Index strength versus market breadth: who is doing the work?
