Reading an oil inventory release without stopping at the headline

An inventory change is one part of an energy balance. A draw can reflect stronger consumption, lower imports, different refinery activity or other changes in supply and measurement. The same headline number can therefore support several explanations.

Build the balance
Read crude stocks alongside refinery inputs, production, imports and exports. Check product inventories and the reporting period. Distinguish a reported level from a weekly change. Note whether the series is adjusted and whether prior values were revised.

Connect the release to the instrument
WTI, Brent, refined products, energy equities and broad inflation expectations are related but different exposures. A company can face rising input costs while an upstream producer benefits from higher realized prices.

What belongs in a forum post
Link the official release, state the data week, separate observed numbers from your explanation, and ask which part of the balance supports that explanation. Avoid claiming the release caused a price move without a properly timed price record.
