CPI day: period, composition and revisions come before the narrative

An inflation release contains several comparisons. A monthly change, an annual change, a seasonally adjusted series and an unadjusted index level answer different questions. Quote the exact series and period before interpreting the headline.
Read the composition
Identify the categories driving the change and distinguish a broad pattern from a concentrated move. Energy can affect the headline differently from services or shelter. Do not assume a one-month move will repeat at the same pace.
Expectation is a separate dataset
“Higher than expected” requires an identified expectations source and its timestamp. The statistical agency reports the measured data; it does not necessarily supply the market consensus used in a headline.
From release to discussion
Link the release, name the reporting month, state the comparison and separate the data from a policy interpretation. If you annualize a short interval or compare different series, show the method. A clean, reproducible observation is more useful than a confident but ambiguous number.
