WTI versus Brent: identify the benchmark before comparing prices

“Oil” is a category, not a complete instrument identifier. WTI and Brent are different benchmarks with different delivery and regional structures. A spot assessment, a front-month future, a continuous futures chart and a broker contract are not interchangeable.

Start with the contract
Write down the benchmark, venue, contract month, quote currency and source time. If a chart rolls between contracts, identify the roll method before interpreting a discontinuity as a market shock.

Then examine the spread
A spread can reflect transportation, storage, regional supply and demand, contract timing or temporary dislocations. It is not simply a universal “fair value” gap waiting to close.

For community comparisons, use like-for-like timestamps and maturities. If that is not possible, describe the mismatch explicitly. The most useful reply often begins by correcting the instrument comparison before arguing about direction.
