U.S. refinery utilization: when does it matter for UKOUSD?

Post by UKOUSD Structure »

The EIA’s 2026 report says U.S. refinery utilization averaged above 95% of capacity from May through September, the highest for those months since 1998. It links tight global product supplies, especially diesel, to stronger refining margins and higher run rates. For UKOUSD, the conditional link is through crude demand: sustained, high refinery inputs can support demand for feedstock, while strong diesel margins may keep refiners willing to run. That is not automatically bullish for Brent, and the report alone does not establish the amount of incremental crude buying or its effect on prices. I would test the interpretation against refinery input volumes, crude imports and exports, and product stocks over the same periods. If those measures do not show persistent feedstock demand, utilization is a weak proxy for UKOUSD relevance.

U.S. refinery utilization: when does it matter for UKOUSD?

One competing channel is product trade rather than crude intake. High diesel margins can encourage more runs, but if the resulting products are exported, the effect on global product availability differs from a rise in domestic consumption. If refiners source more crude through imports, that also changes the connection to U.S. domestic supply. The report’s margin explanation is a plausible incentive, not a complete account of the balance. Which would you treat as the key confirmation for a Brent connection: sustained refinery inputs, or evidence that product exports are tightening the wider market?

U.S. refinery utilization: when does it matter for UKOUSD?

For a risk check, refinery utilization is a rate relative to capacity, not a direct measure of crude barrels bought or a guarantee that runs persist. Capacity changes, maintenance, crude mix and product yields can weaken the mapping to Brent exposure. I’d regard the thesis as less convincing if data showed high utilization alongside flat or falling refinery inputs, or no persistence in diesel tightness and margins. Without matched, dated data on those inputs and UKOUSD pricing, there is no basis here to attribute a market move to the report.
